What Type Of Content Should You Include On Your Business Website?

A website is made up of many elements that together form a platform for your unique online identity. I like to compare a website to a house when I’m explaining the value of good content. Great content is like a well-designed interior; it can help people tell your house apart from everyone else’s. It’s easy to underestimate the importance of your website’s content; however low quality content can easily drive away potential customers. The purpose of a website is in part to help you attract your target audience, so the last thing you want is for people to get put off before even seeing what you have to offer. For people who are new to websites, or refreshing an old one, it can be difficult to know how much content you should have on your site, what size your images should be or what your text should actually say. So what exactly is ‘good website content’ and what should it actually look like?

Text

The text on your website is one of the most important factors. It can help robots identify what you’re about and determine what information about your business will show up on search engines. Text should consist of headings, subheadings and main text. All the text on your website should have a purpose and directly say what you want the customer to know.

The two biggest mistakes that people make when it comes to text is either text that is too long with no useful information or too little text that doesn’t give your audience enough of a feel of who you are. I always suggest to clients that they should write out ALL of their content for each section of their website. I do this to give them an opportunity to understand what goes into their website. A website is more than just the design, the content needs to market your products or services in the best way possible.

Images

Most websites only have a few seconds to capture a visitor’s attention. Because of this, it’s SO important to have visuals that make people want to know more. Nothing is more unappealing than a website with visuals that are too big or small, pixelated, or are of low quality. If possible, I always advise people to get all the images on their website taken by a professional. It may cost a bit of money, but in the end investing in your business will always be worth it. If this isn’t an option, I’d recommend investing in some really high quality stock photos that match your branding.

Video

Videos should always be high definition, and again I would invest in hiring a good videographer to help you create personalised video content. I don’t recommend using too many videos, as this can slow down your website. Together with a good understanding of your business and what you can offer, keeping these points in mind can help your website to stand out on the web.
